Make cake according to package directions stirring together with water vegetable oil and eggs. Heat the butter and sugar in a saucepan stirring until sugar dissolves but not after. Mix the cake batter as directed on the box using the second ΒΌ cup of melted butter the pineapple juice with water and 3 large eggs.
In a large bowl cream together the butter dark brown sugar and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Arrange the pineapple slices and maraschino cherries on top. In a large bowl whisk together flour baking powder and salt. Whisk in the eggs milk reserved pineapple juice and vanilla extract. Combine the reserved pineapple juice with enough water to make 1 total cup of liquid.
