You dont want the layers to be completely frozen when you start frosting your cake because the frozen layers will start to chill the frosting making it really hard to spread your frosting.
Also remove the cake layers from the freezer for approximately an hour before you intend to frost it. As a consequence it wont be easy to spread the frosting further.
